Shelf Life

Product Shelf Life

Everything has a shelf life, even bottled water. Whether it's food, cosmetics, drugs, paint, pesticides or any other commodity, sooner or later the product will degrade to the point at which it loses its initial quality.

Shelf Life is the length of time before something is considered unsuitable for use. For most products it is generally a reference to initial product quality and not the danger of using the product.

For products such as food and some drugs however, using past a shelf life date could be life threatening under certain circumstances.

A Timestrip will visually alert you to the remaining shelf life of a product.

What is shelf life?

Think of shelf life as a warning. The product is still good, but past that date its quality will deteriorate with some products deteriorating much faster than others.

Food is a special case that should not be used past it's shelf life as bacteria will grow on the food causing foodborne illness. Some foods can deteriorate and cause illness in a matter of hours while others will be safe to eat for many months.

What affects shelf life?

The shelf life of any product is determined using optimum conditions for the specific product and in its original sealed packaging. The conditions are ususually determined by the manufacturer of the product. Open the package or change any of the conditions and the shelf life of the product will be shortened. Those conditions are light, temperature, humidity, time and air.

How can I determine shelf life?

Many times you can't identify the shelf life of a product by reading a product label. The shelf life of some products is based upon when the product is opened while others is from date of manufacture. We see terms such as "Best If Used By", "Expiration Date", "Use By", "Best Before", "Freshness Date" and the like. Here you'll find out what these terms mean.
