Cosmetics Shelf Life

The following are general recommended storage times from date of purchase for cosmetics. Recognize that the storage times are based upon optimal storage conditions: a tightly closed container, in its original packaging and in a cool dry location. Storing in less than optimal conditions will usually lead to a shorter shelf life.

Expiration dates, with the exception of eye products, are generally based on product quality rather than risk of infection. However, you can become allergic to anything that you put on your skin.

If your cosmetics are stored in sunlight at high temperature, you can expect less than the optimal shelf life. Many women store their cosmetics in the bathroom, which, like drugs, is a poor storage area. Bathrooms tend to have high humidity and temperature levels which will be detrimental to any cosmetics you may store there.

Natural cosmetics will typically have a shorter shelf life than non-natural products as they typically will not have preservatives in the product.

The more you use a particular cosmetic, the greater the risk for disease causing bacteria to accumulate and the shorter the shelf life.

Any product that you put near your eyes should only be used for a 3 month period. To do otherwise risks getting a serious eye infection.

A Timestrip measures shelf life by both time and temperature and will visually alert you to the risk of continuing to use certain cosmetics.

Blush - Cream 12 - 18 months
Blush - Powder 2 years
Blush or foundation sponges 1 week Wash sponges weekly. Avoid bacteria by washing with warm soapy water and allow the sponge to dry naturally.
Brush on Brow 12-18 months
Concealer 12 - 18 months
Eye gels and creams
3 months Daily exposure to air and germs makes this the most contaminated product
Eye Pencils 12 - 18 months
Eyelash curler pads 3 months
Eyeliner 2 years Sharpening eyeliner on a regular basis will reduce the bacteria on it.
Eyeliner - Liquid 3-6 months Products for your eyes last a shorter time than other cosmetics. It's a good idea to throw away mascara after three months, for example, as you risk eye infections from it. If mascara dries out, do not add water or saliva to it as that will cause germs to grow.
Eyeshadow - Cream 12 - 18 months
Eyeshadow - Powder 2 years
Face wash (cleansing oil, foam or gel cleanser)
1 - 2 years Of all beauty products, face wash lasts the longest after opening.
Foundation Shelf Life: Oil-Free Foundation 12 months Oil-free ones have the shortest shelf life because they tend to dry out quicker than other types.
Fragrance 18 months - 2 years
Lipgloss 18 months - 2 years
Lipliner 2 years
Lipstick 2 years
Lotions 6 months
Lotions are prone to bacterial growth because they are a liquid that is normally used daily. If they have antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C & E, they will lose their potency quickly if exposed to light continually.
Moisturising, Cream or Compact Foundation 18 months
Mascara 3 months If mascara becomes dry, discard it. Do not add water or, even worse, saliva to moisten it, because that will introduce bacteria into the product. If you have an eye infection, consult a physician immediately, stop using all eye-area cosmetics, and discard those you were using when the infection occurred.
Moisturiser 3 - 12 months
Use moisturizers quickly, especially those that contain botanicals and essential oils.
Nail Color 1 year
Natural body cleansers
6 months
Natural Cosmetics   Has less preservatives and therefore more susceptible to bacteria growth. Do not use past expiration date. May contain plant-derived substances conducive to microbial growth.
Powder 2 years
Products with SPF 1 season
Rogaine 3 years
